Moving in the morning
A little more than 12 hours from now, and the moving truck will arrive. Then it’s off to the new apartment.
Plates, post and pans, and my computer systems are all that remain to be packed. I’m right to the edge with boxes. I may have to unpack plastic stuff from the kitchen (bike bottles, OJ pitcher, Tupperware, etc.) and just dump it in a trash bag to free up a box. We’ll see.
Meanwhile, I’m awaiting a pizza. The dinner I planned on—reheating roast beef, potato, corn—depends on the microwave. Sometime between making bacon this morning, and attempting to thaw a hot dog for lunch, my microwave died. It makes strange noises, but doesn’t heat anything.
So I put everything in the freezer, had granola bars for lunch and have ordered a pizza for dinner and breakfast.
With one notable exception, everything has gone well so far. I confess my anger got the better of me on Friday morning when I learned the old tenant at my new place still hadn’t called Time-Warner to disconnect his cable. Thus, Time-Warner won’t schedule an installation for me until after I’ve moved-in.
Their rationale is that they don’t want to deprive him of his phone and email until he cancels the service. The problem is, that it will deprive me of my Internet and phone service until at least Thursday.
And as you may recall, I make part of my living on the Internet. The door buzzer system at the new place uses your phone. So Time-Warner’s be-nice-to-the-old-guy policy, screws the new guy, and deprives me of my livelihood and makes it impossible to receive guests.
Thanks Time-Warner!
And yes, I contacted Frontier. They are priced competitively, and can have me turned on by 5pm if I call by 9am. But, the only place I can pay the bill in cash in person is out of Jefferson Road, which is about the most cycling unfriendly road in the county.
Still, lots of other stuff could have gone wrong so far, and nothing really has.
I’ve really been able to clean out. Even through the day today I cleaned out as I packed, and I thought I was already done with cleaning out.
Tonight’s remaining projects are to clean the oven, pack the plates, pots and pans, and begin taking down the computer systems. Then, get to bed early.
In the morning, I plan to get up early, empty the freezer and fridge into a cooler I borrowed from my parents, strip the beds, and finish taking down the computers.
When I took my bike rack down off the wall, working around two bikes roaming the floor was a hassle. So I’ve treated them to a little spa time at the bike shop, just to get them out of the house. First the Portland went in for some preventative maintenance on its wheelsets, and a new rear brake caliper under warranty.
Right now Yellow Bike is getting its spa treatment, and a new rear brake caliper. That one was seized when I bought it. I got it working, but it’s never stayed centered. I like the feel of the new caliper we put on the front after the crash, so Yellow Bike is getting a new rear one to match.
After the move, the Portland is going in for a new fork under warranty. One of the fender eyelets spins freely around in its hole. Thus, I can’t tighten that side down, and the fender rattles. Alas, since it’s a warranty job, it won’t be getting a Wound Up fork. Then again, I don’t have to buy the fork.
