First on the block

While checking links for the Sunday entry, I found that Wayne from The Touring Store was going to Interbike, the big annual industry trade show this week. But he’s also going on vacation right afterwards.

Yikes! I thought. What am I going to do for a rack?

I decided to dip into the grocery budget so I could order the rack a little early. In a pinch these next two weeks, I could raid the emergency money I keep in each of my two bike bags. So I bit the bullet and called Wayne.

New Tubus Cosmo Rack

Come to find out, the Tubus Cosmo rack I wanted has been redesigned and is now completely different. Wayne sent some pictures and explained the differences, saying he still had some of the old ones in stock, so I had a choice.

The new Cosmo has upturned stops on the front of the upper deck to keep loads from sliding forward when braking. The upper deck is also wider so trunk bags are more stable. And it extends further to the rear providing some protection for the taillight.

The taillight mounting bridge is also sturdier and designed in such a way as to keep pannier hooks in place so they don’t slide off the back.

He didn’t have specs on the weight, but since it’s bigger than the old Cosmo, I expect there’s more mass as well. But it retains its 30 kilo (66 pound) weight rating, which is 16 pound more than the rack on Bike.

Best of all, the price is the same. So I bought it. It should be here mid-week next week, so Yellow Bike will be without its rack for only a few days.

I hope you’re referring to the Cosmo rather than to my manboobs…
