Chainsnapper and the quads of doom
I was on my out the door this afternoon when I remembered that I hadn’t oiled Bike’s chain after hosing it down last night after the TNUA.
As I was turning the cranks and dripping Pedro’s Syn Lube on the pins, I saw something that didn’t look right. Initially I thought the master link had come loose. Nope. The outer plates on both sides of one pin on a regular link were cracked and separated. The thing was barely in one piece!
Yow! Talk about thunder thighs!
Fortunately, I leave early for work so I had time to throw on a new chain. I took off my work clothes, inverted Bike on the coffee table and removed the master link. I pulled out one of my spare chains, and ran it around the big ring and the big cog to size it up. Finding the right length, I dropped it in the chain tool, and removed the appropriate pin. Then I threaded it through the derailleurs, around the chainring and cogs, and put in the new master link.
I washed up, changed back into my work clothes and was out the door in less than ten minutes total time. And I still made it to work 15 minutes early.
I was hoping to get past salt season before replacing Bike’s chain, but that’s life. I’m glad that, due to Yellow Bike, I had spare chains in stock and a chain tool.
And maybe I’ll quit whining about losing power in my legs.
