Time to kill

I have an hour before going to work. Not enough time for any of the projects I have. So a little ramble.

New Link

I upgraded my membership at Bike Journal. One of the options of premier membership is that I can make my ride log public. You’ll find the new link in the right-hand column.

Ride times are time-in-motion. The clock on the cyclometer stops when I stop (say, at a light) and starts again when I do. It’s not such a biggie on training and leisure rides, but on commutes, it makes my real travel time look a lot shorter.

Average speed and cadence are similarly affected. Slowing down and starting up (and creeping along in bumper-to-bumper traffic) yeilds average speeds lower than the typical cruising speeds I report here. Similarly, average cadence drops due to coasting.

Clerk’s position

The clerk’s position at the library was posted last week. I rode down to the Central Branch with my application, cover letter and CV today. It’s 13½ hours a week, all day Friday and Saturday, about four more hours per pay period, at about a $5/hr higher rate. I’ll interview with my boss soon, I expect.

Lockup

When I locked up at the bike rack at Central Branch, I discovered something nice about my new saddle. My cable fits right through the cutout. (The saddle has a long, cut out section down the middle to relieve pressure on the prostate.) So I don’t have to carry my saddle and seatpost around with me when locking in sketchy areas. At $85 for the saddle and $40 for the seatpost—and they fit universally on any bike—it’s the sort of thing I worry about for replacement cost as well as rideability.

So now I run my cable through the front wheel, through a helmet vent, detach the seatpost and run it through the saddle, before connecting the cable through the U-lock, which secures the frame and rear wheel to the rack. Worked really well.

Sleepy

Last night I just couldn’t get to sleep. Mostly it was too may squirrels running around in my attic. I finally got around four hours from nine this morning to one in the afternoon. Not doing so well right now. And I have a new page starting regular hours tonight. I’m supposed to keep an eye on him, help him out and introduce him to closing procedures. I’m going to have to start by telling him if he thinks something I say doesn’t make sense, that he’s probably right.
