God laughed

There’s a joke in AA that goes:

Q: Do you know how to make God laugh?

A: Tell him your plans for tomorrow.

Saturday, God laughed.

CBC has been working like a dog for the past three weeks, but still planned to get on the road early enough to pick me up for the picnic in Buffalo, like six or seven AM. Didn’t happen. She couldn’t get out of bed until almost noon. Which meant that she didn’t get to R-town until after the meeting here started at seven.

The picnic was a dish-to-pass affair and I’d made a picnic-sized macaroni salad on Friday night. Used my biggest bowl. Turned out okay, having a ton of macaroni salad in stock. It’s nice to have ready-to-eat refrigerated food in this heat. (92°F, 33°C today and muggy. More of the same predicted for all through to the weekend.)

When I arrived at the meeting, the secretary asked, “Have you ever chaired this meeting before?”

“Couple of times, but not in almost two years.”

“Tonight’s speaker canceled. Wanna chair tonight?”

So I was the speaker, and partway through my drunkalog when CBC arrived. She was somewhat shocked, given that I’d built-up how nice it was going to be to hear the scheduled speaker. And there I was.

I’m told I was quite engaging and even though I ran over (by about twice the usual amount of time) everyone who commented said they’d’ve liked it if went on a while more.

Not from pure reasons, I told it this time from the standpoint of being a geek—the social awkwardness, isolation and so on. Hoping to get another geek boy in the room to warm up—particularly to me.

Didn’t work.

Yet.

Listening now, for the laughter from above.
