Next step
Wednesday was Staff Appreciation Day at the library. Although it’s normally one of my days off, I went in at noontime in order to be appreciated.
There were six pizzas, a veggie tray, chips, several varieties of cookies, and assorted soft drinks laid-out in the Children’s Room. Along with this year’s collection of grab bag gifts, about which, the boss told us, “You’ll be glad to know I spared no expense.” Tongue firmly in cheek, of course.
During pizza and goodies I scoped-out the grab bag table. Only one of the package was wrapped in purple tissue, which meant that it was either the good one, or the ringer. I guessed the ringer. And I was right. It was a plushie pink lip-shaped pillow that, when squeezed, makes smooching noises. Go me!
However, the Children’s Library Assistant (and union rep) gave me something far more interesting. I was early and as she let me in the building she asked, “You’re not looking for a new position, are you?”
“No, not actively. But if something fell into my lap—”
“—But not full-time, with your business and all, right? ”
“Well, I’ve been rethinking that lately.”
“Then come with me.”
I did. She printed an email. Handing it to me she advised, “Now think benefits, benefits. You’re not getting any younger, you know.”
I scanned it as she told me, “Now don’t go getting any thoughts. I’m giving this to several people, but I think you’re particularly well qualified.”
I am.
Under qualifications it reads, “Experience with computers and word processing required. At least one year of experience in a library setting with an automated circulation system preferred.”
It’s for a Library Circulation Coordinator with the NYS Unified Court System, Appellate Division, Fourth Department, Law Library conveniently located just 15 minutes’ walk away.
Base salary in the low 30s, 20 days paid vacation, 12 paid holidays, 13 sick days, medical, dental and life insurance, and of course, a government pension. Now I know why they call it civil service—it’s a much more civil package than you get in the private sector.
I downloaded the application as soon as I got home. I’m reworking my CV and running several cover letter strategies through my head. I intend to have the package polished and presented well before the May 11th deadline.

Yes. It’s not every day you get a pink, plush, smoochie pillow.
