Friday shorts
After having royally screwed up my sleep patterns with The Experiment, it’s taking a while to get back to normal. I’m hoping that by Monday things will be all sorted.
Got an official attaboy from a patron at the library today. He stopped me three times as I was passing by to confirm that Clippy the paperclip wouldn’t be on his resumé when he printed it out (No), how to type past the bottom of the screen (Just keep typing) and how to save to a floppy. Simple shit, made him happy and there’s now another nice comment in my personnel folder.
Got a memo at work today saying that pages on the Step B pay rate will retain our 50¢/hour above minimum wage rate. Good news. And I promise not to spend it all in one place. First thing my boss said was, “Now don’t use this as an excuse to cut your hours again.”
And coming on Monday, all new shelves for videos. I’m wetting myself with anticipation. I offered to come in early if they need extra hands to re-shelve the collection.
This morning, RoadRunner seems to have boosted my download speed from 3Mbps to 6Mbps. The cable modems are remotely configurable so all they had to do was open the throttle a bit. This should significantly reduce the download time for my weekly full server backup, which had been pushing 3¾ hours. A while back I looked at their Business Class service, and at the time, 6Mbps download was a cool $85/month. I’m still paying $30.
I only wish they’d give us a little more on the upload side. It appears that overnight they boosted it from 384Kbps to 512Kbps (or ½Mbps), which, granted, is 10 times dial-up and twice what the local DSL provider is offering, but it’s damned tedious when you have, oh, say, 250MB of software upgrades to upload as I’m doing now. The extra overhead of Secure FTP (encrypted) eats into that too, so my net, actual throughput is less. Still, it’s 33% more than I had yesterday.
Snow continues to melt, front door continues to stick. Perhaps there’s another issue with it.
Oh, I’m down to 155 lbs. That’s 25 lbs. lost since September. Not doing anything special. Just portion control. I figure I’ll balloon up when I quit smoking, so starting from less will likely make it a bit less traumatic.
Good news is I can tie my shoes without having to sit or kneel. (My belly fat is not all jiggly, but rather, forms an incredibly solid shield over my abs. It could stop bullets.) Bad news is that my library jeans fell down around my knees the other night when I got off the bus with three bags of groceries. I’m now wearing “good” jeans to work.
