And in other news…
The allegation has been bandied about the we may break freezing today. I’m thinking that may be a little optimistic since at daybreak it was -8°F. But it’s sunny as all get up and other than air traffic, there’s nothing marring the deep blue sky.
The weight of all the snow on the roof has shifted something over the front door to my apartment. It’s one of those all-steel firedoors in an all-steel doorframe, so we’re not talking warping due to temperature or humidity. Starting this week it requires a good, hefty, two-handed yank (or a hearty shoulder push from the outside) to get it open.
The ice on the fire escape stairs makes the kitchen door useful only for emergencies so if feels like my apartment is conspiring to keep me indoors. As with all conspiracies, I’m doing my best to bust it.
I’ve turned out some excellent work this week on the Camp Whitman web site. The work still needs client approval, so sorry, no link. If you’d like a preview and promise to give good, honest feedback, email me at and I’ll send you the URL.
The camp director listened to my suggestions this past summer and took some excellent photos. From those, I culled 26 candidates for a new header graphic. Being unable to decide between them, I did some research and am using ALA’s Random Image Rotation script. There’s another version here that I may use for photos within pages sometime. But for a background header graphic, the first one is the better choice.
I just dumped all the images in a single directory, named the script index.php and put it in the same directory. Then in the CSS, I use the script name instead of an image name, as in:
background-image: url(/images/headers/);
The result just screams “Fun summer camp!” But it does so tastefully.
I’ve lost one design client due to my inablity to get work done these past several months. The Writers & Books account is in serious jeopardy, just at the point where I was trying to convert them from a pro bono job to a paying one. I may still be able to pull that one out of the fire. Dunno.
The two library sites are the next project to knock down. I hope to begin the development work next week. Over at the GAGV, the Technology Committee finally has support, committment and representation from both the board and the staff. We accomplished more at this month’s meeting than in two years of previous meetings combined.
This morning, a pretty new hosting client called to inquire about setting up another account for his other business. That’s significant since a month ago when he called, he was upset and disillusioned with the entire hosting industry. I feel pretty good about how esay it was to make him happy.
Finally, a plug for friend, longtime reader and hosting customer, Carlos of PivotPoint, LLC in Denver. He launched the redesign of his site this week, and it looks great. I have no qualms about linking to another web designer’s site because we’re in different markets and market segments, he’s a friend, and, well, his stuff just rocks. Check out his portfolio.
