It’s a wonderland

Since Sunday night, we’ve had our first real, complete winter weather. To date, we’ve had cold weather but no snow, small amounts (2–4”) of snow but fairly warm, and just plain unwinterlike weather.

An arctic high (30.45” or 103.1 kp by my living room barometer) moving cold air south over the lake changed all that. The lake-effect machine kicked-in and we got 8–16” (20–40 cm) of snow on the ground between Sunday night and Monday night. Lake-effect is very highly localized. The extemes of these ranges can be separated by only a mile or two.

Several times during the day yesterday it was impossible to discern where the roof across the courtyard ended and where the sky began. Sometimes it was due to the cloud height and other times because of the snow falling. Although I’ve not been down to the ground yet, from the window it appears we have 10–12” in the courtyard.

And it’s MF cold. Last night, apparently the humidity from cooking and doing the dishes seeped into the kitchen door locks and froze. I was just about ready to go out the other door for my smoke when the knob finally turned, releasing me.

Nearly noon now, it’s still only 0°F (-17°C) with a wind-chill of -16°F (-27°C). And that’s under the blazing sun. Between the sun and the snow, my Photogray’s darkened appreciably just sitting in front of me on the desk.

Speaking of glasses, I decided a while back that I suppose I ought to get new sunglasses. These lenses were my first bi-focals which I got when I was 39. The frames pre-date that by at least six years.

I aked Tamra about it when I stopped in to One Hip Chic Optical last Friday for a routine adjustment. Although these new frames are titanium, they’re semi-rimless. Since the lenses are held in with, essentially, fishing line, there’s not much strucural rigidity, so it’s easier to knock them out of whack.

Anyway, she did her usual standing back, hip cocked, frowning hand on chin thing before suggesting two frames from the shelf. After trying them on, one of them met with her approval, “But,” she said, “if you can wait until March, there’s a couple of pairs from the Paris show I think would really work for you.”

I can’t afford it until April or May, so that’s no problem.
