The relaxing day I intended

Poor planning resulted in my having to venture out this morning. I’d gone through the grocery inventory, made sure I had enough books from work, the laundry and cleaning were done, but what I’d forgotten, was cigarettes.

The Corner Store is closed on holidays, so that meant a bus ride to the Mobil station and a twenty-minute walk back. So much for two days of complete hibernation.

On returning I could identify the cooking smells that had been drifting in all morning. Someone, probably the girl across the hall, is cooking a turkey. Smells like it’s getting close to done too. I’m hoping she planned on eating this early. She started around seven or so.

I was already awake then, but rolling around in bed trying to get back to sleep. Downstairs neighbor guy is an early riser, usually leaving for work around six. He was up at his usual time this morning clunking around down there. I hardly ever hear him but the freezer had decided it was cold enough and took a break, and he’s getting ready to move. I guess he was packing.

While it’ll be nice to to be able to play the stereo with a little bit of bass, and to play it at all after 3:30 in the afternoon, the prospect of new neighbors down there also holds the possibility of someone like doofus next door moving in.

Directly across the courtyard, a box of Kleenex and a guitar moved in on Monday. They were joined by a metal folding chair and wooden kitchen table on Tuesday. Yesterday a twentyish looking guy sat on the chair by the window all day, alternately reading the paper and playing the guitar. He left before nightfall.

Since turkeys, or even turkey breasts, seldom come in single person sizes, I’ll be roasting a chicken today instead. The chicken is thawing and I have all the fixin’s ready to go. If enough collects in the roasting pan, I may even make gravy too.

Meanwhile, I’m going to watch the snow swirl around in the courtyard, read a book, maybe take a nap or two. But all that comes after lunch.
