Letter to my landlord
I hand-delivered this note to my landlord’s office a few moments ago:
July 29, 2004
***** Properties
ATTN: **** ***
*** Goodman St N
Rochester, NY 14607-****
Dear ****:
I called 911 this morning around 5:55 after the domestic dispute in apartment 21 escalated and I heard the female yell, Give me the God damned fucking gun asshole!
Im trying really, really, hard to be tolerant. Particularly given that the tenant is employed by ***** and has access to keys to my apartment, and is drinking buddies with another employee who also lives in this building. I dont take that consideration lightly.
However, this has gone beyond lost sleep and chewed fingernails. Im concerned for my own safety, that of the tenants involved, their children and for the other tenants in the building.
I dont like being awakened shortly after 5:00 in the morning by a domestic argument two floors away.
I dont like lying awake in the pre-dawn hours listening to such arguments.
I dont like calling the police or having four officers show up at my door at 6:00 AM.
These are clear, and ongoing, violations of paragraphs 23(4), 23(5) and 27(1) of the lease I signed and, I presume, has been signed by the tenants in question.
More importantly, I dont like the idea of living in fear of retaliation from people with keys to my apartment. Beyond the simple quality of life issues, I run my own business from my apartment. While insured against physical loss of business equipment, I cannot afford the interruption of business any sort of retaliation would cause.
Worse still, the idea that such a volatile situation could involve firearms, alone, is enough to cause me major concerns and severe disturbance.
I deserve to live in a safe, peaceful apartment free from such fears, concerns and disturbances. For the quality of life of all parties involved, I would like ***** Properties to put a stop this continuing problem, and I am happy to cooperate in any manner which will bring this to a reasonable solution.
Yours,
Bruce Wilbur
The lady in the office, BTW, said the entire staff enjoyed the “COPS” letter I wrote them earlier this month.
Followup: Less than an hour after delivering my note, the lady in the office called to say they are giving the tenants 30-days notice to vacate. Solves my problem, but I’m still concerned for the kids
