Café or laptop shop?

I went with a friend for coffee this morning to Spin Caffe [sic] on Park Ave. Not counting the two of us, there were six people there. Five of them had laptops out in some degree of real or feigned usage, the sixth left his in the bag.

I just don’t get it. Don’t these people have homes or offices to work from? I go out for coffee to get a break from work, they go out for coffee to do (or appear to do) work. It doesn’t even appear to be a generational thing since they were all pretty close to my age.

Now the coffee break isn’t something we do to get away from work and back to life, but rather, something done to get away from life and back to work.

Welcome to the new millennium.
